The Town of Yarmouth is seeking applications for the position of Building Official.Reporting to the Director of Planning and Development, the successful candidate will primarily work in collaboration with the Town's Building Official and Fire Inspector administering and enforcing the Nova Scotia Building Code, Building By-law, the Minimum Housing Standards By-law, and the applicable provisions of the Municipal Government Act related to the provisions under the Dangerous or Unsightly Premises. A successful candidate may also be required to assist the Town's By-law Enforcement Officer to provide appropriate level of service and coverage.This position offers an excellent opportunity for an individual who is looking to develop their career in municipal building inspections and code administration while working as part of a supportive and collaborative team.Key ResponsibilitiesAdminister the Nova Scotia Building Code Act and Regulations and the Municipal government Act provisions related to dangerous and unsightly premises.Receive and review building, occupancy and demolition permit applications and review plans.Issue building, occupancy and demolition permits.Conduct inspections to ensure compliance with applicable codes, legislation, and by-laws.Respond to inquiries from contractors, property owners, and the public.Enforce other municipal By-laws, as directed.Education and ExperienceQualified Level 1 Building Official or completion of the courses required to obtain Level 1 qualification with a willingness to achieve certification.A minimum of five (5) years of residential and/or commercial construction building experience.A commitment to obtaining and maintaining required Building Official certifications with the goal of becoming a member of the Building Officials Association of Nova Scotia (NSBOA). Consideration will be given to those applicants with a two-year post secondary diploma in a related field or a Red Seal Trade certification combined with relevant construction experience may be also considered.
